Good evening . DEM test results came in today and we tested negative for cyanobacteria . We have to have 1 more negative test in a week for the ban to be lifted .The bad news is the state lab is moving and will not be processing any samples for a few weeks . I am going to see if I can take some samples to a private lab for testing . I spoke to DEM about this and hopefully it can be worked out . So the ban is still in effect for now .The lowering of the lake will commence on Columbus Day weekend so haul your boats out before then . We are already down 12″.
RIDOH and DEM Recommend Avoiding Contact with Several Bodies of Water
The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) and Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) recommend avoiding contact with the following bodies of water due to confirmed cyanobacteria blooms:
Smith and Sayles Reservoir in Glocester
Wilson Reservoir in Burrillville
A section of Waterman Lake (Russell Road Beach) in Glocester
A section of Wenscott Reservoir (western basin, south of Douglas Avenue) in North Providence/Smithfield
Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, are naturally present in bodies of water, but under certain environmental conditions will form harmful algae blooms (HABs). Swimming, fishing, boating, and kayaking, is high risk to health and should be avoided at these locations. HABs can produce toxins that can be harmful to humans and animals.
Use caution in all of these areas, as HABs can move locations in ponds and lakes. People should not drink untreated water or eat fish from affected waterbodies. Pet owners should not allow pets to drink or swim in this water.
Contact with water containing cyanobacteria can irritate the skin, nose, eyes, and throat. Symptoms from ingestion of water can include stomachache, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea. Less common symptoms can include dizziness, headache, fever, liver damage, and nervous system damage. Young children and pets are at higher risk for health effects associated with cyanobacteria HABs because they are more likely to ingest water when they are in or around bodies of water. People who have had contact with these ponds and experience those symptoms should contact their healthcare provider.
If you or your pet come into contact with a cyanobacteria HAB:
Rinse your skin with clean water right away.
Shower and wash your clothes when you get home.
If your pet was exposed, wash it with clean water immediately and don’t let it lick algae from its fur.
Call a vet if your pet shows signs of illness like tiredness, no eating, vomiting, diarrhea or other symptoms within a day.
If you feel sick after contact, call a healthcare provider.
Affected waters might look bright to dark green, with thick algae floating on the surface. It may resemble green paint, pea soup, or green cottage cheese. If you see water like this, people and pets should avoid contact with the water.
To report suspected cyanobacteria blooms, contact DEM’s Office of Water Resources at 401-222-4700 Press 6 or DEM.OWRCyano@dem.ri.gov and if possible, send a photograph of the reported algae bloom. For more information and the Freshwater Cyanobacteria Tracker Dashboard that lists current advisories and data, visit: www.dem.ri.gov/bluegreen

CALL TO ORDER REPORTS OF THE OFFICERS PRESIDENT SECRETARY TREASURER OLD BUSINESS GATEHOUSE UPDATE BYLAWS CHANGE APPROVED BOAT GREETER PROGRAM NEW BUSINESS APPOINT NEW DIRECTOR INVESTMENT POSSIBILITIES BOARD AND MEMBER CONCERNS ADJOURNMEN NEXT MEETING MONDAY SEPT 29THT
Dear SDRA Members, Two important events are coming up, so please mark your calendars for Sunday morning, August 10th!
SPECIAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Sunday, August 10th at 10 am: This very brief meeting will be held at the Sand Dam Day event. The sole agenda item is a proposed amendment to the By-laws.
Recommendation: That a landowner with a “deeded right of way to use the reservoir” will be eligible for full membership. A very important aspect of this proposed change is that it requires DEEDED access, not access through an easement. Nor would it enable the proposed 14 homes to be built at Waterview Acres to be eligible as individuals for full membership. Cited below is how the proposed language would be included in amended by-laws.The language in blue shows the proposed change.
Section 1. Eligibility for Full Membership
Landowner Regular Membership: Any landowner with property adjacent to the Sand Dam Reservoir, or landowner with a deeded right of way to use the Reservoir, is eligible to join the Association and become a voting member of the Association. A member of the SDRA shall be the recorded landowner(s) of property abutting the Reservoir or landowner with a deeded right of way and must pay annual dues for such membership.
Note: if you are unable to attend the meeting, you may vote by proxy as follows: To exercise this privilege, a signed proxy shall be filed at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting with the Secretary of the Association, Meg Fournier (connorsmeg@yahoo.com).The proxy shall be given to a voting member.
